Groups accepting donations for holiday flag display

Lower Burrell Veterans of Foreign Wars and Lions Club are seeking donations for their Flags over Three Cities project that will place American flags on Election Day and federal holidays on Freeport and Leechburg roads in New Kensington, Arnold and Lower Burrell.

Sponsorship to maintain one flag is $25 per year; two for $45 and three or more flags for $20 each. Flags need to be replaced every four to five years.

To contribute, send a check payable to Flags Over Three Cities with your name, address, telephone number and email address to VFW Post 92, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road, Lower Burrell PA 15068-3640.

Car cruise and concert set for Sunday at Hartwood Acres

The free 2024 Summer Concert series will feature Jeff Jimmerson and Airborne Sunday at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater, 4070 Middle Road, Hampton.

The Father’s Day car cruise will be from 2 to 7 p.m. and the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Bring a chair. Popup tents and umbrellas are permitted but must be taken down before the performance begins. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash at all times and be up to date on all vaccinations and licensing. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Self-defense class for women offered at A-K Health Foundation

The Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation will offer free self-defense class for women from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 19 at the foundation office, 1 Acee Drive, Natrona Heights, Harrison.+

Bob Makowski, co-owner of Makowski Martial Arts, will demonstrate hands-on techniques to avoid becoming a victim of a would-be attacker.

June 23: New Kensington Eagles Auxiliary will host a super bingo at 2 p.m. at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church social hall, 1601 Kenneth Ave. Doors open at noon. There will be 14 regular games that pay $100; five specials, and a must-go $1,000 jackpot game; silent auction, small games of chance and a 50-50. Snacks, pop and water will be sold. June 21: The Outdoor Discovery Center at Crooked Creek will host a free program about pollinators from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, 142 Kerr Road. Sunday: The Alle-Kiski Valley Historical Society’s Flea-Tique antique and collectible show will be from daybreak to 1 p.m. at the Bull Creek Tour-Ed Mine site, off Bull Creek Road. Rain or shine. Harrison

Today: Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the post, 894 Veterans Lane. Doors open at 6 p.m., and there will be specials, a 50-50 raffle and final game jackpot.

Sunday: The Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a car cruise from noon to 5 p.m. at the post pavilion, 894 Veterans Lane. Angel Blue & the Prophets will play from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. There will be a food truck, drink specials and 50-50.

June 24: The Adult Crafting Club at Community Library of Allegheny Valley will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd. This month’s project will be a seashell frame for a favorite beach memory. Leechburg

Today: The Elks will host a Flag Day celebration at 7 p.m. at the lodge, 228 Market St. The Kiski Valley Community Band will perform patriotic selections. Public welcome.

July 11: A rubber ducky race fundraiser to benefit the borough’s 175th anniversary celebration next year will be at 5 p.m. on the Kiski River. Ducks will be dropped into the river from the walking bridge to Hyde Park and will be fished out at the finish line at the firemen’s boat launch. Prizes will be awarded. Cost: $5 per duck. Ducks are available at Leechburg Public Library, 139 Market St. Checks payable to Leechburg Area Community Association will be accepted.

Lower Burrell

Today: Washington Township Volunteer Fire Company will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the firehall, 4078 Route 66. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and sales start at 6 p.m. Free coffee. The kitchen will be open. Players must be at least 18 or accompanied by an adult.

Wednesday: A veterans service officer will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the office of state Rep. Jill Cooper, 105 Pfeffer Road, suite 5. Services available will include disability and pension claims, benefit questions, assisting spouses with survivor benefits issues and applications for veterans grants. West Deer

Today and Saturday: Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh will host a free star party at 9 p.m. at the Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory, 225 Kurn Road, in Deer Lakes Regional Park, weather permitting. Bring binoculars, a blanket and camping chair. Use only parking lights when entering through the park gate.
