What happens if swap is full? ›

If the swap space is full, the system starts swapping out active memory, leading to performance degradation and even system crashes. Information loss. If the system loses power during intensive swapping, the swap file is not flushed to disk, resulting in data loss.

If there is less than 1GB of RAM, the swap size should be at least the amount of RAM and, at most, double the amount of RAM. If there is more than 1GB of RAM, the swap size should be at least the square root of the RAM amount and, at most, double the RAM amount.

Generally, any amount is "safe". The concern is what sort of hit you take on performance by using swap and with SSDs, high amounts of swap could mean additional wear and tear on the SSD to the amount of writes.

Swap space should be twice the size of the RAM if RAM is lesser than 2 GB. If RAM size is more than 2 GB (i.e. 5GB of swap for 3GB of RAM), then swap space must be size of RAM + 2 GB.

An easy way to do this is to run 'free -m' to see what is being used in swap and in RAM. Once you power it off, you can wait an arbitrary amount of time (30 sec or so) to give the operation time to complete, then power the swap back on. This clears the swap memory cache and re-enables it.

The main reason why your swap might have failed is likely to be slippage. When you perform a swap, you are agreeing to a price quote. If the price of the swap goes outside of the allowed slippage set (typically 2-3%), it will fail, in order to prevent you from seeing a huge variance in value when completed.

Without swap: We cannot swap out rarely-used anonymous memory, as it's locked in memory. While this may not immediately present as a problem, on some workloads this may represent a non-trivial drop in performance due to stale, anonymous pages taking space away from more important use.

Just like an option or futures contract, a swap has a calculable market value. As such, one party may terminate the contract by paying the other this market value.

When swapoff disables a swap device (or file), the data that's stored there is read back into memory. If there isn't enough available memory to do so (perhaps by swapping out to another swap device, if any are still available), swapoff fails with exit status 2.

You can influence how swap is working by adjusting the swappiness parameter in your OS. To increase how much your kernel swaps set swappiness higher, increasing memory performance at the expense of I/O performance. To swap out less often, set it lower, increasing I/O performance at the expense of memory performance.
